Meet the wild horses

Ride into the Lunar New Year with 5 people born in the Year of the Horse.

  • Sunmin, born 1978

"Horses are the powerhouse of the family, we’re always go-getters.

“In Korean culture, we call it pali pali culture which is really kind of galloping, doing things quickly and very mission-oriented. I think that really characterises a person born in the Year of the Horse.”

  • Kurtis, born 2014

"I’m celebrating the Lunar New Year with my cousins and family. We have dinner together. It’s very fun and the best part is that we get red packets which have money inside them.”

  • Anthony, born 1990 and his grandmother Mai, born 1930

"My grandma and I were born 60 years apart so not only are we both born in the Year of the Horse but we’re also elementally metal horses.

“For people like me married with children, we give the red packet to grandma whereas before it would be coming from her to us as children. So we have a lifetime ahead of us to, in a way, pay back what we have received our entire lives.”

  • Ju'eta, born 1978

"Horses ground everyone. In a chaotic family like mine, I’m the one who pulls things together, really grounds everyone and helps them see things in perspective.

“To celebrate, we do the lo hei, which is the toss of the salmon salad and we shout out prosperity greetings to everyone to bring in the new year with friends and family.”
