Surry Hills fire: information on support available for affected residents, owners and businesses

The City of Sydney, NSW Government and non-government agencies are working together to manage the impact of the fire on 25 May at 7-13 Randle Street.

Our thoughts are with those impacted by the fire and support is available.

Road closures continue in some streets around the building site. Find more information.

If you are a tenant that has been displaced by the fire or own a property or business in an impacted building, and have not already done so, we recommend you register with the Red Cross: register.redcross.org.au.

Registration will ensure you receive key communications.

Alternatively, contact your strata or property manager for the latest information.

Clean-up and waste collection

The City of Sydney is working closely with building managers of affected buildings.

If you have bulky waste or other waste needs, contact your building manager. They will coordinate pick-ups.

For any other waste questions contact the City of Sydney’s customer service team on 02 9265 9333 or council@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au. Let them know you are in a building impacted by the Surry Hills fire.

Financial support

If you are experiencing financial difficulty, contact Centrelink to seek an eligibility assessment for a one-off crisis payment and assistance with accommodation costs.

Counselling and mental health support

It’s completely normal to experience a range of emotions following an event like this. This can happen not only immediately after the fire, but also much later With clean up underway, for some residents, this can be an emotional time. Support is available and if you or someone you know needs help, reach out.

Food, clothing and wellbeing support

If you need support accessing food or clothing, contact the Salvation Army on 02 8775 7988.

For assistance with referrals to other support agencies contact Red Cross on 1800 077 284.

For anyone at risk of homelessness because of the fire call the Disaster Welfare line on 1300 306 548.

Legal advice and tenancy rights

If accessing these services make it clear you have been officially evacuated and advise if power supplies and other utilities have been cut off.

Insurance

If you have home or contents insurance or landlord insurance, contact your insurer directly.

Building insurers are liaising with owners’ corporations directly.

Business support

If your business has been impacted, contact the Service NSW Business Concierge.

They’ll identify the specific support and services available to your business, including relevant grants. Request a call back on their website mybusiness.service.nsw.gov.au/concierge or call 13 77 88.
